Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday approved two Metro corridors in Greater Mumbai with a total investment of Rs 25,525 crore. The 23.5 km DN Nagar-Bandra-Mankhurd Metro 2B corridor entails investment of Rs 10,986 crore while the 32 km Wadala Ghatkopar Thane Kasarvadavli Metro 4 corridor will cost Rs 14,549 crore. Metro rail network of 124 km in Greater Mumbai with a total investment of Rs 61,289 crore. The Metro 2B and Metro 4 corridors are expected to be operational in 2021-22. Metro 2 corridor will have a daily ridership of 800,099 commuters and Metro 4 corridor to have 8,70,000 commuters.
At present, the 11.4 km Versova Andheri Ghatkopar Metro corridor is operational since June 2014.
The state run Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is the nodal agency for the implementation of Metro projects in the city.
MMRDA official hoped that the upcoming Metro projects will not only save fule, time and improve environment but also help decongest roads. Besides, suburban railway commuters will get one option.
