AR Rahman’s ‘Jai Ho’ to reverberate at UN on India’s 70th Independence Day

Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman is all set to perform at United Nations General Assembly on the occasion of India’s 70th Independence Day. This will be second time in a year when India will showcase its strength at the international platform. Prior to this, renowned spiritual leader Sadhguru had led a yoga session on the occasion of International Yoga Day on June 21, which was attended by top UN officials,

ambassadors, diplomats and yoga practitioners. With this performance, Rahman will become the second Indian to perform at UN. Before him, veteran carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi had performed here in October 1966. The 49-year-old musician has got international recognition for his original work and bagged several awards. The music maestro made history when he became the first Indian to win two Oscars in a year, 2009, for Danny Boyle's “Slumdog Millionaire”, the rags-to-riches story of a Mumbai slum-dweller. He had performed live on 22 February 2009, the night it won the award for Best Original Song.

The ‘Mozart of Madras’ had also bagged two awards at the 52nd Annual Grammy for his song “Jai ho” from the same film.

During 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Rahman had played “Jai Ho” as part of a medley with “Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto”.
