Activities and events that take place during the day include:

Background
Audiovisual documents like films, radio and television programmes are our common heritage as they contain the primary records of the 20th and 21st centuries. They help to maintain the cultural identity of the people.
However, many sound recordings, moving images and other audiovisual material are lost because of neglect, natural decay and technological obsolescence. Organizations such as UNESCO felt that more audiovisual documents would be lost if stronger and concerted international action was not taken.
Thereby, the UNESCO General Assembly in 2005 approved October 27 as the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage to raise awareness of the importance of Audiovisual documents as integral part of national identities and draw attention to the urgent need to protect them.
Since then the World observes this day every year by organizing activities around a theme agreed upon by the Coordinating Council of Audio-visual Archive Associations (CCAAA), the UNESCO designated body to oversee the yearly celebrations of the day.
