BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Friday gave the green signal for buffalo racing events in coastal Karnataka starting November 19. Justice A S Bopanna passed the order in response to a petition filed by the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts Kambala Samiti challenging the refusal of permission the local administration. The races would have to be conducted as per the government order dated
December 17, 2015 in which a few conditions were imposed on the organisers. Among them are that buffaloes cannot be subjected to cruelty of any kind and should be provided with proper food, water and shelter, etc.
Kambalas are annual he-buffalo races during November-March. More than 45 races are held annually in coastal Karnataka, even in remote villages.
The races are held in wet paddy fields filled. The contest is generally between two pairs of harnessed buffaloes, prodded by a farmer. Rewards are given out to the winners as is the custom.
