Russia has confirmed it has sent an advanced missile system to its naval base in Syria's port of Tartus. The announcement came after Washington said it was suspending talks with Moscow aimed at reviving a ceasefire deal over Russia's support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Washington blamed Russia and the Syrian government for intensifying attacks against civilians,
including rebel-held areas in eastern Aleppo.
Earlier, a ceasefire brokered by Washington and Moscow collapsed last month.
Russia has also suspended an agreement with the US on the disposal of surplus weapons-grade plutonium, the latest sign of worsening bilateral relations.
In a decree, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the US of creating, a threat to strategic stability, as a result of unfriendly actions towards Russia. Moscow also set pre-conditions for the US for the deal to be resumed.
