The Kathmandu University in Nepal on Thursday awarded an honorary DLitt degree to visiting Indian President Pranab Mukherjee at a special convocation ceremony. The honour was conferred to Mukherjee by Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is also the university’s chancellor. Mukherjee is the third person to be awarded the honour, said the university, the others being Congress leader Karan Singh and
Nepalese scholar Satya Mohan Joshi. President Mukherjee offered a special puja at Pashupati Nath temple in Kathmandu earlier in the day. Prior to this, he paid homage to the Sankatmochan Hanuman and Nawagraha and offered the special prayers to the Devadhidev Mahadev with lighting of 125,000 wick lamps.
He was received by Gargi Kanya Gurukul students and Batuks of Nepal Ved Vidhyashram.
Following the special pooja, he received offerings from Pashupati Temple's main priest Ganesh Rawal.
Culture minister of Nepal Jeevan Bahadur Shai, who is also the chairman of Pashupati Nath Area Development Trust, presented a 'token of love' to President Mukherjee.
While signing visitors’ book at the temple, the President mentioned that India would assist in the reconstruction of the Pashupati area.
