Filmmaker Arun Chidambaram’s debut venture Kanavu Variyam is going places. Though the film is not released yet, it has it has won eight international honours, including the prestigious Remi Award at the 49th World Fest Houston International, recently. Arun tells CE, “I am off to Russia this Tuesday for another film festival. I am happy with the recognition that the film has been getting globally. They help a debutant
filmmaker like me when the film is released in theatres. There’s a huge non-diaspora market to accept good Tamil content.” Kanavu Variyam deals with the power cuts in villages across Tamil Nadu. A hypothetical question posed in the film is what if there’s a solution to the power cuts. “That’s the crux of the film. There are scientific elements involved in the story, making it more interesting,” he shares. Besides directing, Arun plays the protagonist in the film, shot extensively in and around the villages of Jayam Kondaan and Nagercoil for over 50 days. Arun believes in promoting films internationally before releasing it, but admits that it does not translate into commercial success. “By the time the film releases here, the honour it had received in film festivals would give it an edge…a lot of publicity. Having said that, the recent success of some of the Tamil films in the festival circuit like Kaaka Muttai (2015), has increased the awareness to a great extent,” he points out.
He urges filmmakers to look at non-conventional business markets. “Any film that has a relevant content, made to suit international audience, will drive business globally,” he adds.
