The Election Commission has issued a notification regarding amendment to rules regarding recognition of parties as national or state party. This change in rules will ensure that national or state party status earned by a parties in one election will continue after next general election even if they failed to meet the required criteria, which means the review of the status will take place every two consecutive Lok Sabha or assembly
elections instead of one.
The BSP, CPI and NCP were facing the prospects of losing their national party status after their dismal performance in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
