Rio 2016 Olympics declared closed, over to Tokyo 2020 now

The 2016 edition of Olympic Games were declared closed by IOC chief Thomas Bach after a colourful closing ceremony at the iconic Maracana. The athletes were in celebratory mood and the rain didn’t affect their spirits. Great Britain, who finished as the second-best country with 67 medals, stole the show with their shoes flashing lights red, white and blue. For India, Sakshi Malik carried the tri-colour. The Indian contingent
was placed 67th with just two medals – one silver and one bronze. This figure was less than the six medals – four bronze and two silvers – won at London 2012. Like 2012, USA ended on top and their medal haul improved from 103 to 121.
As it happened:
# The flame is distinguished, and the 16-day event is officially over!
# IOC president Thomas Bach declares Rio 2016 Olympics closed
# Thank you, to all the volunteers. Your smiles have warmed our hearts: Bach
# A passionate speech by president of Rio Organising Committee. He wishes Tokyo luck for 2020, and signs off by calling Thomas Bach, a friend of Brazil
# Prime Minister of Japan makes a super mario-like entrance. #Tokyo2020. Plenty of cartoons there – doreamon and super mario!
# Rio mayor waves the Olympics flag for one last time, hands it over to Bach who gives it Tokyo’s mayor

# Tokyo governor and Thomas Bach on stage. Official handover for 2020 begins
# Loud cheer as the organising committee recognises the contribution of the volunteers. Athletes give them a rousing applause
# Galen Rupp awarded the bronze medal by Thomas Bach and Sebastian Coe. Silver goes to Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa. Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge with the GOLD MEDAL. Kenya won both men’s and women’s marathon
# Medal ceremony for the men’s marathon event about to get underway. The event was completed earlier in the day
# Focus now shifts from the stage to the main arena. A celebration of clay!
# Athletes take their seats and the show begins in Maracana. The rain continues, and so do the performances
# Umbrellas out, layers on. Rain getting heavier now. No more a light drizzle. Athletes continue to enter the Maracana!
# There is some rain coming down but it’s not hampering the spirit of the athletes. Some are covered, while others don’t seem to care

# Great Britain up the swag quotient as their athletes sport shoes flashing lights – red, white and blue
# It’s taking time for all the athletes to take their spot because Maracana, the football stadium, has only one entry point
# Athletes dance, enjoy and celebrate. It’s not about competition right now, it’s about celebration – of triumph and struggle

# China make their way out to the middle. Not a good outing for them as they lose the London second spot to Great Britain

# Athletes continue to march out and occupy the plastic chairs. The biggest party, and celebration, is about to get underway. Plenty of weird lights around? They aren’t effects but smart-phone leds. Almost every athlete has one hand glued to their phone
# Who is your pick? Bolt certainly stands tall with his ‘triple-triple’

# Performers line-up to depict Christ the Reedemer. Athletes continue with their march, plenty have entered and plenty still left

# No team separation, athletes of different countries march together
# Athletes, with their phones out, march together to the middle. Everyone glued to their smart phones, recording all the moments

# Athletes enter the arena. Plenty of flags there, and the best-performing athletes do the honours. For India, it’s Sakshi Malik with the tri-colour
# Brazil national anthem enters the arena. 27 kids sing their national anthem. Very windy at the moment, kinds finding it difficult to hold on their hats

# Tribute to Brazil’s musical greats now. Soothing notes and the crowd is definitely enjoying their act
# Performers create the Olympic rings, with plenty of colour! Symbol of unity
# The handover from Rio to Tokyo – host of 2020 Games – is officially underway with a musical celebration of the 2016 edition
# The medals tally is sealed for Rio 2016 Olympics. Click here to find out where your team stands after all the competitions
# The ceremony begins with celebration of Rio’s fauna. Plenty of orange at the moment and some splendid work with light and music
# Maracana lit in shades of blue and it soon changes to a dash of orange as the countdown for curtains begins
# We are all in readiness for the closing ceremony. The medals tally has been confirmed, and USA lead with a haul of 121 medals. India are 67th with just two medals – one silver and bronze
