Jewellers get one more month to register with excise department



Jewellers across the country have been given one more month to register themselves with the central excise department, a statement from the government said.Finance minister Arun Jailtey, had announced a levy of 1% excise duty on all non-silver jewellery, which triggered a nation-wide protest against the government. Jewellers shut shop for over 45 days, resulting in losses running into thousands of crores.
arlier, jewellers were asked to register with the excise department by July 1, but that has now been extended by a month. The excise duties will be with effect from March 1, 2016, the Finance Ministry said, and jewellers can settle the March-May duties along with the June dues by July 31.
