Shambhu Singh Yadav, a retired IAS officer and secretary to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was today appointed as the Deputy Lokayukta of the state. “The governor today appointed Shambhu Singh Yadav as the new Deputy Lokayukta (Up-Lokayukta) of the state,” a Raj Bhawan release said. On joint recommendation of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Lokayukta Justice Sanjay Misra, a letter was sent to
Raj Bhawan last week in this regard. The government had recommended Yadav, a 1997-batch IAS officer, presently posted at the Chief Minister’s secretariat on extension. Yadav, considered close to ruling Samajwadi Party, had retired three years ago and served as special secretary to former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav in the previous SP government in 2003. The Deputy Lokayukta is appointed in consultation with Lokayukta and the CM. The post of Deputy Lokayukta was vacant since Swatantra Singh’s term ended last year. The selection of Up-Lokayukta takes place under consultation with the Lokayukta and, unlike the latter’s appointment, there is no requirement to consult Chief Justice of Allahabad.
Swatantra Singh was appointed Up-Lokayukta on October 1, 2007 and served until the end of his term in September 2015. However, amendments in the Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta and Up-Lokayukta Act now allows the sitting Up-Lokayukta to continue until the new appointment has been finalised.
