Jaya announces ‘Amma Kaipesi’ scheme

Chennai: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced a new scheme called ‘Amma Kaipesi’, under which free mobile phones with a special software will be provided to trainers of self-help groups (SHGs) in the State. Making a statement under Rule 110 of the Assembly, she said in the first phase, mobile phones would be provided to 20,000 trainers at a cost of Rs 15 crore. “The trainers have to
maintain various registers regarding the functioning of the SHGs, including details about meetings, payment of subscription, internal credits, savings, payment of loans, etc,” she said, adding: “So, in order to store the details and to monitor them, the mobile phones which are to be given to the trainers will be loaded with a special software in Tamil.”

Recalling that women SHGs were set up by her government in 1991 to eradicate poverty by financially empowering women, Jayalalithaa said in 2005, her government started ‘Tamilnadu New Life Scheme’ with the help of World Bank for the uplift of the poor and women.

As a result, women SHGs emerged a big force and 92 lakh members are presently part of the 6.08 lakh SHGs all over the State. She said panchayat union-level federations are formed to co-ordinate with SHGs, and each federation has 20 to 25 SHGs under its ambit.

Experienced members of the SHGs are being selected as trainers and they are responsible for training of new members and forming of new groups, the Chief Minister said.
