Thiruvananthapuram: The government has set up a committee to identify the land for constructing an airport at Sabarimala. The committee have been asked to submit the report in this regard within two weeks. After identifying the land, the procedures for preparing the project report will begin immediately. The Cabinet meet had given in-principle approval in February for the Sabarimala Greenfield airport. The government also entrusted(सौंपा गया) KSIDC to conduct a study on the matter. Initial reports had said that the airport that will be constructed for the benefit of Sabarimala pilgrims will be located at Erumeli. The Centre had clarified that it would give approval for the airport after the government identifies the land. The government is considering the estate at Cheruvalli in Erumeli, and the estates in Laha and Kumbazha including Chengara. While the Cheruvalli estate is under the possession of Bishop K P Yohannan, the Laha and Kumbazha estates are possessed by Harrison Malayalam plantation.

The government started considering other places to construct the airport after it became clear that an airport could not be built in Aranmula.
