World Immunization Week 2017

World Immunization Week (टीकाकरण सप्ताह) 2017

The annual observance of World Immunization Week on April 24-30 seeks to heighten public awareness about the critical importance of full immunization throughout life. With the theme “#VaccinesWork,” the week long observance promotes the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease and to underscore the vital role of immunization in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Through the 2017 campaign, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners seek to: highlight the importance of immunization as a top global health investment priorty; promote understanding of the action steps required to achieve the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP); and showcase immunization’s role in sustainable development and global health security.

The year 2017 marks the halfway (आधे रास्ते) point in the GVAP that was endorsed in May, 2012, by 194 member states of the World Health Assembly. The GVAP aims to prevent millions of vaccine-preventable(रोकथाम योग्य) deaths by 2020 through universal access to immunization. Routine immunization, as a pillar of primary health care at the beginning of life and offers every child the chance of a healthy life from the start. Immunization is a cornerstone of global health security in a world where diseases do not respect national borders and it is widely recognized as one of the world’s most successful and cost-effective health interventions.

Despite gains in individual countries and the increasing global rate of new vaccine introduction, all the targets for the elimination(निकाल देना) of disease, including measles, rubella, and maternal and neonatal tetanus, are behind schedule. The WHO asserts that for everyone everywhere to survive and thrive, countries must exert more concerted efforts to reach GVAP goals by 2020. It likewise cited the imperative(अनिवार्य) for countries that have made forward progress towards achieving the goals to sustain those efforts over time.

Recognizing that the Internet is a powerful and handy source of information, the WHO through its Vaccine Safety Net (VSN) has made sure that parents, caregivers, and health care professionals can easily access accurate and trustworthy information about vaccines. The VSN is a global network of vaccine safety websites, with 47 member websites in 12 languages, which are accessed by over 173 million users every month.

The WHO and its partners admit that apart from the implementation challenges, they are faced with substantial research challenges. Vaccines are lacking or sub-optimal for many serious infectious diseases that claim so many lives worldwide. It, therefore, enjoins the global health community to work together to advance progress. It urges governments to exercise strong leadership and good governance of national immunization programs by prioritizing system strengthening, securing investments, and improving monitoring and surveillance capacity and data quality and use.

The success of the GVAP will still greatly depend on the cooperation and support of stakeholders – families, communities, health professionals, civil society, development partners, global agencies, manufacturers, media, and the private sector.
