Geetha Johri Appointed Gujarat Interim DGP
“We have accepted Pandey’s resignation and the notification on appointment of Geetha Johri as new DGP is likely by Tuesday,” said Pradipsinh Jadeja, Minister of State for Home on Monday. The 1982 batch officer, Johri is the first woman IPS officer in the state. Incidentally(संयोग से), she’s also now become the first woman interim chief of the state’s police force. Johri has been posted at the State Police Housing Corporation, Gandhinagar before the news of her new appointment came in. She had started her policing career in 1982 in Ahmedabad and later was posted to Gandhinagar and Vadodara. She catapulted(आगे बढ़ना) in to fame after taking on mafia don Abdul Latif by raiding his den in Popatiawad at Dariapur and arrested his gunman Sharif Khan in September 1992. Earlier in April 2015, she was promoted from the rank of Additional DGP (ADGP) to Director General of Police after the CBI court had dropped charges against her in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. She also continued serving as Managing Director of the Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation till April 2016.
She was also one of the members of the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) which had probed the ten most heinous (घृणित) cases of 2002 riots(दंगों). It was headed by former CBI Chief RK Raghavan. Former DGP P P Pandey, a 1980 batch Gujarat-cadre IPS officer, is an accused in the alleged fake encounter case of Ishrat Jahan. He is presently out on bail.
“To save the government from getting into an embarrassing position due to the ongoing litigation in the Supreme Court, Pandey himself expressed his willingness to step down as the states DGP-in-charge two days back. The same was conveyed to the apex court today,” Minister Jadeja told reporters on Monday in Gandhinagar after meeting senior officials.
Earlier Monday, the Supreme Court allowed the Gujarat government to accept Pandeys offer to quit as DGP-in-charge to relinquish(त्यागना) his office with immediate effect.
Pandey was on extension till April 30. Pandey’s appointment and extension has been challenged by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Julio Francis Ribeiro, who has said in his public interest lawsuit that Pandey was granted bail, reinstated, promoted and rewarded despite being an accused in a murder case.
