Sahitya Akademi awards 2016: 24 writers felicitated (सम्मानित)
On Wednesday, 24 writers were conferred with the Sahitya Akademi Award which is given by the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters to the writers with the most outstanding books of literary(साहित्यिक) merit published in any of the 22 official Indian languages. Over 200 writers, scholars, poets, translators and critics(आलोचकों) from all over India were present at the event to mark the extravagant (असाधारण) celebration of literature. Eminent Kannada writer and Fellow of Sahitya Akademi, SL Bhyrappa inaugurated the three-day-long event 'Festival of Letters' which kicked off on Tuesday. The award ceremony took place at Kamani Auditorium. The theme for this year's Festival is Folklore and Oral Literature of India, the Akademi said in a statement. Eminent scholar and Historian Ramachandra Guha will be delivering "Samvatsar Lecture" today on February 23. The topic of his lecture will be "The Craft of Historical(ऐतिहासिक) Biography".
Sahitya Akademi Secretary K Sreenivasarao said, "This year, the festival is starting on 21st February 2017, which is the international Mother Tongue Day and the Akademi is also organising a two-day National Seminar on 'Protecting Mother Tongues' , where a number of literary stalwarts will participate.'' The festival will continue till 26 February.
A young writers' festival called Yuva Sahiti and Spin-A-Tale for children will also be organised, besides a host of cultural performances from different parts of the country.

Moirangthem Rajen (Manipuri)
Asaram Lomate (Marathe)
Paramita Satpathy (Odia)
Bulaki Sharma (Rajasthani)
Vannadhasan (Tamil)
The award winning novelists are:
Jerry Pinto (English)
Nasira Sharma (Hindi)
B M Kunhi (Kannada)
Edwin J F Dsouza (Konkani)
Gita Upadhyay (Nepali)
Aziz Hajini (Kashmiri) and Nizam Siddiqui (Urdu) won the award for their books on criticism, while Nrisinghaprasd Bhaduri (Bengali) won for an essay book, and Swrajbir (Punjabi) for the play.
