Municipal Corporation (TMC). The Shiv Sena, that broke its 25-year-old alliance (संधि) with BJP and decided to go solo in Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections, maintained its grip on the BMC and TMC. The Congress and the NCP were way behind the Shiv Sena and the BJP in the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections 2017.  In the BMC elections, the Shiv Sena won 84 of the 227 seats. The BJP came close with 82 seats. The Congress trailed at a distant third in the BMC elections and could bag 31 seats. Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) finished with 7 seats. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bagged 9 seats and Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) got 3. All eyes are now on which party goes ahead and takes charge of the BMC.

Shiv Sena is also set to retain power in Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), where it has captured(पकड़े) 60 of the 131 seats. The NCP stood at the second position, winning 31 seats, while the BJP came close with 21 seats. Congress could bag just 3 seats, whereas the MNS failed to win in a single ward. It was BJP all the way in the other municipal corporations across Maharashtra. The BJP raced towards victory in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), pushing the ruling NCP to a poor second spot. The Shiv Sena, MNS and Congress faired poorly in the PMC polls. The BJP secured a clear lead in 77 seats, while the NCP was ahead in 44 wards. Congress was way behind at 16 and Shiv Sena could win just 10 seats. MNS managed to win just 6 seats. The contest was close in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, with the ruling NCP leading in 29 seats while the BJP emerged as the largest party with 58 seats. The Congress failed to get even a single seat in Pimpri-Chinchwad, whereas MNS could win just one seat. In Pune, the BJP was leading on 89 out of the total 152 seats, in Ulhasnagar on 32 (78 total seats), Nashik-32 (122), Nagpur-72 (145), Amaravati-21 (87) and Akola-31 (73). The results of the 10 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, have seen the Congress plummeting(बोझ) to a new low with the lowest ever tally in the BMC and losing Solapur and Amravati to the BJP. On the other hand, it is a big victory for the BJP as the results point to the party’s surge across the civic bodies of the state. In the BMC, too, the BJP has not yet lost the game. If the party manages to strike an alliance and garner outside support, it may well go ahead and take charge of the BMC. It is, therefore, too close a call at the BMC. However, seats like Nashik, which were not a BJP stronghold have sprung a surprise for the party.

In 2012, the NCP had won 265 seats across these 10 municipal corporations, while the Congress had won 264 seats. The Shiv Sena had won 227 seats while BJP had won 205 seats. This year though, the tally has fairly changed.
