Big day for Indian squash, Chennai lad wins gold at British Jr open It was a big day for Indian squash and a dreamfinish as for the first time it was a 1-2-3 honour at the British Junior Open tournament held at Sheffield last night. Reports received here today said Indians won gold, silver and bronze at the prestigious tournament. National Coach Cyrus Poncha said it was a dream finish as the
Indians swept way the U-19 honours with a fabulous show. "This is the biggest thing that has happened to Indian Squash at the junior level. The British Open is the 'Wimbledon' of Squash and in this 2017 edition, India had three players finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Boys u-19 category'', he said. It was in the 1970s that Anil Nair won this event first for India and in more recent times current National Champion Saurav Ghosal did it in 2004," Cyrus said. Velavan Senthilkumar won the coveted Drysdale Cup (becoming only the third Indian boy) with 15-13, 11-2, 10-12, 11-7 win over compatriot and unseeded Abhay Singh in a close final. And there were more cheers, thanks to the bronze medal effort of Adhitya Raghavan. These three have been training partners for years, all products ofthe Indian Squash Academy in Chennai.
