After selfie gaffe, Rajasthan women’s panel member quits

Rajasthan Women’s Commission member Somya Gurjar, who posted a selfie with a rape victim, resigned on Thursday following widespread condemnation of her act on social media and in political circles. Women’s Commission chairperson Suman Sharma had also reportedly sought a written explanation from Ms. Gurjar. The selfie, in which Ms. Sharma also appeared, was clicked at the Japiur
(North) Mahila Police Station on Wednesday when a delegation of the State Women’s Commission met the rape survivor. The 28-year-old woman had lodged a complaint with the police accusing her husband and his two brothers of raping her. She had also accused her in-laws of tattooing expletives on her body when her parents failed to meet their demand for dowry.

Women’s groups in the State said bringing the victim’s photo in the public domain was a very serious matter.
