PV Sindhu delighted to win maiden India Open Super Series title
World No. 5 PV Sindhu equalled her head-to-head record against arch-rival Carolina Marin after beating the Spaniard in the women's singles final at the India Open Super Series tournament on Sunday. Sindhu prevailed 21-19, 21-16 against the current world champion, which was her fifth win over Marin overall. (PV Sindhu outclasses Carolina Marin to clinch maiden India Open Super Series title).
The Olympic silver medallist was visibly ecstatic(उत्तेजित) and relieved after a hard-fought win over Marin."It was a good match, Marin played really well. The first game was anybody's game at 19-19. This is one of the very important tournaments and it came right at the start of the year. The crowd (भीड़) was very supportive and my coaches as well have been very helpful," Sindhu said after the match. This was Sindhu's second Super Series title after the China Open last year where she defeated Sun Yu of China in the final. Marin on the other hand, has been struggling with her fitness since last year and has been able to perform at her best ever since her Rio Olympics triumph.
"I think every player is improving. We are playing in the finals. My best performance was at the Olympics but since then I have had a few injuries but yes, I am getting back," Marin said.
The former world No. 1 is often accused of wasting time during her matches and has been on the receiving end of numerous warnings from the match umpires in the past. But on Sunday it was Sindhu who kept Marin waiting on several occasions. Marin though, refused(मना कर दिया) to play the blame game and said the umpires should look into this matter."This is a problem that umpire should look into. Two years ago at the German Open I did not delay the game but still got two red cards," she added.
This was the second meeting between Sindhu and Marin after the Rio Olympics in August last year where the Spaniard defeated the fifth-ranked Indian 21-19, 12-21, 15-21 in a thrilling(रोमांचक) contest to win the Gold medal. Sindhu then beat Marin in straight games (21-17, 21-13) to enter the semi-finals of the year-ending Dubai World Super Series Finals in 2016, where she eventually lost to Sung Ji Hyun in the last-four stage.
