Sushil Chandra to take charge as CBDT chairman

Senior Indian Revenue Service officer Sushil Chandra will  take over as chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the policy-making body for the Income Tax department. Incumbent Chairperson Rani Singh Nair  retired from service after being at the top post for three months, after she took over on August 1. Chandra, a 1980-batch officer of Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre), is at present working in the
board as Member (Investigation). His dynamism and forward-looking vision is expected to further energise the Income Tax Department in its taxpayer-friendly measures and new initiatives in the area of e-governance.
The officer is credited with getting the I-T department success under the one-time black money window, also known as the Income Declaration Scheme (IDS), that ended on September 30 and as per official figures, 64,275 declarants disclosed Rs 65,250 crore of hidden income under it.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister had early this month approved the name of Chandra as the CBDT Chairman to replace Nair.
An IIT graduate, Chandra will be in office till May next year. CBDT has six members apart from the chairman, and is responsible for framing policy and administrative issues related to direct taxes and the Income Tax department.
