CHANDIGARH: Sangita Vardhan, who runs NGO Vatsal Chaya, received a national award for child welfare (individual category) by the ministry of women and child conferred by the President in Darbar Hall, Rashtrapati Bhavan, on Children's Day. Every year the award is given to three individuals doing good work for the welfare of children. "It was one big day in this journey of hope and heart for me and everyone in
Vatsal Chaya," she said on her account on social media. The National Awards for Child Welfare for 2015 were given to five institutions and three individuals in the field of child development and child welfare, which includes cash prize of Rs 3 lakh to each institution and Rs 1 lakh to each individual.
In individual category, awards were given to Sangita Vardhan from Chandigarh, K R Ravi (from Kerala) and Dr Bikas Ray (from Tripura).
Sangita Vardhan is associated with Vatsal Chaya Trust and works for children located in adverse conditions by mapping vulnerable areas like slums, bus stations, markets, and resettled colonies for out-of-school children or for children in need of care and protection. She provides educational support to underprivileged section of the society and has brought 3,000 children into school system.
Being among all these people was really inspiring, she said. "There was a woman teaching archery to children in Jharkhand in Naxalite area and has won 200 medals. There was an auto driver who saves money, food, stationery and supports poor children in school. There was another woman from Cuddles Foundation which gives nutritional support to children with cancer. It was a privilege to be there and to receive the award from the President," she said.
