Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-Based Index for the Month of January, 2017
(Base 2004-05=100) The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2004-05
for the month of January 2017 have been released by the Central Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation(कार्यान्वयन) . IIP is compiled(संकलित) using data received from 15 source agencies viz. (i) Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP); (ii) Indian Bureau of Mines; (iii) Central Electricity Authority; (iv) Joint Plant Committee, Ministry of Steel; (v) Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas; (vi) Office of Textile Commissioner; (vii) Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals; (viii) Directorate of Sugar & Vegetable Oils; (ix) Department of Fertilizers; (x) Tea Board; (xi) Office of Jute Commissioner; (xii) Office of Coal Controller; (xiii) Railway Board; (xiv) Office of Salt Commissioner; and (xv) Coffee Board.
2. The General Index for the month of January 2017 stands at 191.3, which is 2.7 percent higher as compared to the level in the month of January 2016. The cumulative growth for the period April-January 2016-17 over the corresponding(संबंधित) period of the previous year stands at 0.6 percent.
3. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of January 2017 stand at 146.1, 199.2 and 195.6 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 5.3 percent, 2.3 percent and 3.9 percent as compared to January 2016 (Statement I). The cumulative(संचयी) growth in these three sectors during April-January 2016-17 over the corresponding period of 2015-16 has been 1.4 percent, (-) 0.2 percent and 5.0 percent respectively.

In terms of industries, nine out of the twenty two industry groups ( as per 2-digit NIC-2004) in the manufacturing sector h ave shown positive growth during the month of January 2017 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (St atement II). The industry group ‘Electrical machinery & apparatus n.e.c.’ has shown the highest positive growth of 42.4 percent followed by 21.8 percent in ‘Radio, TV and communication equipment & apparatus’ and 12.4 percent in ‘Basic metals’. On the other hand, the industry group ‘Office, accounting and computing machinery’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 16.0 percent followed by (-) 14.8 percent in ‘Food products and beverages’ and (-) 13.4 percent in ‘Other transport equipment’.
5. As per Use-based classification, the growth rates in January 2017 over January 2016 are 5.3 percent in Basic goods, 10.7 percent in Capital goods and (-) 2.3 percent in Intermediate goods (Statement III). The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 2.9 percent and (-) 3.2 percent respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being (-) 1.0 percent.
6. Some important items showing high positive growth during the current month over the same month in previous year include ‘Cable, Rubber Insulated(विद्युत-रोधित) ’ (282.8%), ‘Fruit Pulp’ (121.5%), ‘Vitamins’ (46.9%), ‘HR Coils/ Skelp’ (40.0%), ‘Telephone Instruments including Mobile Phones and accessories’ (31.7%), ‘Plates’ (27.2%) and ‘Antibiotics and it’s preparations’ (25.9%).
7. Some important items that have registered high negative growth include ‘HR Sheets’ [(-) 39.6%], ‘Ship Building and Repairs’ [(-) 31.9%], ‘Sugar’ [(-) 28.2%], ‘PVC Pipes and Tubes’ [(-) 27.0%], ‘Molasses’ [(-) 26.0%], ‘Leather Garments’ [(-) 24.3%] and ‘Three-Wheelers (including passenger and goods carrier)’ [(-) 24.3%].
8. Taking into account the weights, the dominant item groups (five each) which have positively and negatively contributed to the overall growth of IIP are given below:

9. Along with the Quick Estimates of IIP for the month of January 2017, the indices for December 2016 have undergone the first revision and those for October 2016 have undergone the final revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. It may be noted that these revised indices (first revision) in respect of December 2016 may undergo final (second) revision along with the release of IIP for the month of March 2017.
10. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC-2004) and by Use-based classification for the month of January 2017, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of the previous year including the cumulative indices are enclosed.
