IT ministry orders blocking of 240 escort service websites in India

A similar effort to block several porn websites in the country had caused uproar with netizens forcing the government to stop moral policing the internet. However, this time, the IT ministry in India is taking another step into the same area, but on another world. The ministry has ordered ISPs to immediately block around 240 websites that are offering escort services. Failing to do so would attract action under the IT Rules 2009.

240 websites that were listed to be blocked included Xmumbai.in, Shimi.in, Anchu.in, OnlyEscorts.com, Payalmalhotra.in, PinkySingh.com and many others that are presently well-known in the escort world. According to media reports, ISPs claim that the website blocking would take a few days, but on the other hand, blocking these website would do no good as they would start operating under different names and tracking them down time and again would be difficult. As for now, a number of websites are being blocked by various ISPs, while some are still operative. It will be only a matter of time when netizens again call for lifting the ban, similar to the previous porn ban issue. On the other hand, there seems to be no stopping these types websites as many of them operate from outside the country where the Indian rules do not apply. And even if they do, they are all geared to spring up with different names (domain names) within a few hours.
